Why Session Overlaps Matter
When two major stock exchanges are open at the same time, the combined order flow from both regions increases market depth. More buyers and sellers competing simultaneously means tighter bid-ask spreads and more efficient price discovery.
The London–New York regular equity overlap is normally 9:30–11:30 AM ET (2:30–4:30 PM London local time). It lasts three hours during the US/UK daylight-saving mismatch: 9:30 AM–12:30 PM ET (1:30–4:30 PM London time). This combines the New York open with the end of London's regular session.
For forex traders, overlaps are even more critical. The EUR/USD pair, for example, sees its highest daily volume during the London–New York overlap because both the eurozone and the US dollar economy are active simultaneously. Trading the same pair during the quiet Asian session typically means wider spreads and less momentum.
Tokyo and London regular equity sessions do not overlap. Tokyo closes at 06:30 UTC, while London opens at 07:00 UTC in British summer time or 08:00 UTC in winter. Hong Kong and Singapore can overlap the London session briefly; forex dealing hours are a separate concept.
