Why Timezone Conversion Matters for Traders

Global financial markets operate across a continuous 24-hour cycle on weekdays, with each major exchange opening and closing in its own local timezone. For traders and investors who follow instruments listed on multiple exchanges — or who trade US equities from Europe or Asia — converting session times accurately is a daily necessity.

Errors in timezone conversion are a surprisingly common source of avoidable mistakes: a trader in London miscalculating the US pre-market open, or an investor in Singapore not realizing the NYSE closes before their evening begins. The difference between Eastern Standard Time (EST, UTC−5) and Eastern Daylight Time (EDT, UTC−4) alone accounts for a one-hour shift that applies twice a year — and the US and European clocks do not change on the same dates, creating a brief window when the offset between London and New York is only four hours rather than the usual five.

The converter above uses your browser's built-in timezone data and automatically applies daylight saving adjustments, so the times shown always reflect current offsets. All session hours shown are regular trading hours; pre-market and after-hours extended sessions are not included in the open/closed indicator.

Key Session Times at a Glance

US Open (9:30 AM ET)

The NYSE and NASDAQ open. This is 2:30 PM / 14:30 UTC (standard time), 1:30 PM London time in winter. One of the two highest-volume moments of the global trading day.

London Open (8:00 AM GMT)

The LSE opens, marking the start of the European session. At 8:00 AM GMT / UTC in winter, this corresponds to 3:00 AM Eastern Time. The London open often sets the tone for European equities and EUR/USD.

Tokyo Open (9:00 AM JST)

The TSE opens the Asian session. JST is UTC+9 with no daylight saving adjustment. 9:00 AM Tokyo is 12:00 AM midnight UTC and 7:00 PM / 8:00 PM Eastern Time (depending on DST).
